This one was inspired by one of Avian Invasion's Progressive Birdhouse DJ sets on Twitch, in which there was a poll about physical audio formats. It's a riff on Above & Beyond's “Thing Called Love”:

[Verse 1] Start with a clock, a sampling rate A Nyquist frequency From pressure wave to logic gate The PCM flows free Glass master burns with coherent light A careful mix laid on every track Two channels, left entwined with right If there's mistakes, you can't go back [Hook 1] (Now) press a compact disc full of lands and pits Error correcting codes where the laser hits Soon every boombox sold will know just how to play a compact disc Albums now, they're coming out on compact disc [Verse 2] Through tech advance and sales decline I wonder how I'll feel If plastic case and rainbow shine End up like reel-to-reel Will we have lost our one last way To know our sounds stay as they were? Convenience mounts with online play Do local files make for safe return? [Hook 2] MPEG and Vorbis frames cross the Internet Opus and AAC, more efficient yet Listen on your PC, or take it with you on a cute handset Streams and files of music through the Internet [repeat Hook 2]

The last double hook feels like it could use to be two separate stanzas instead of a repeat—since I'm already changing the repeat structure, AAA → ABC (or ABA, but that feels harder to pull off) would feel cleaner than AAA → ABB. Hmm.

Main description

Dragon. Or dragons? They look like one, but with a striking color scheme. Much of them is split down the middle between black and white feathers, but if you look closely, the feathers often move more independently than they really ought to. Apparently this creature is based on a flockmind of drackels—but now they gleam, too, with pervasive interlacings and augmentations in glorious bronze…

The whole is somewhat larger than a horse in each primary dimension, along with at least four meters of total wingspan. The body plan broadly matches the usual for a quad dragon, though the legs end in paws with more digits than you might expect, and the tail has a forked tip. Most of the surface of the body is black on the left and white on the right, with traces and dots of bronze scales covering it like circuitry. The wings are an exception, each one composed of broad expanses of chaotic black and white feather surfaces bordered at the front by a jointed coppery structure.

Further up, the neck is primarily composed of chaotically braided drackel weave with a more regular bronze spiral overlay. The head mostly resumes the bilateral coloration across the tapering muzzle and the macroeyes above, and the back of the head is graced with three pairs of bronze-tipped horns.

Further down, most of their chest and belly is covered with paler, broader, overlapping bronze escutcheons which reflect their mood.

Dangling awkwardly around their neck is a square rod of a material somewhere between marble and crystal, attached to a cord at both ends. The rod has two patterns of angular joined-up writing carved into alternating sides of the exterior; the one on the lighter sides translates to ‘QUARTZWING’, and the one on the darker sides to ‘METIAGON’.

Grains” (draft), based on Irene Cara's “Fame”

[Verse 1]

Breakfast comes to pass
Wait, what's this food made of grass?
How'd it get here? If you look back:
Ancient farmers jamming their flax
In sacks!

We've got barley here
Let's turn it into beer
Fermentation keeps out the rot
Putting yeast on the spot
So let me explain

[Refrain 1]

Grains!
They can be stored forever
Humans will learn how to bake cake
Flourful biscuits with leaven
Oatmeal or grits when you wake

[Refrain 2]

Grains
Threshing the stalks so they sever
Amber spread over our plains
Grains
They can be stored forever
Farmers and settlers with grains

[Verse 2]

Human, don't think twice
Just boil a pot of rice
Throw some meats and veggies on top
Add some love and that's bibimbap
So hot!

Ooh, that bran is tough
But if you've had enough
Then grind the germ out 'til it's refined
Leave the fiber behind

Sooooo… [personal profile] davidn just released a video about “David's Dreadful Old WADs” (15m57s), and in his patron chat, after some banter, ministryofennuicontrol joked that they were waiting for the next platinum single from Albion to be “Unclosed Sectors”.

And this led me to remember that “Lost Symbols” (5m38s) was available on David's channel as the free promo track from Albion's latest album Buried Souls.

And then I felt compelled to open Emacs. (This was originally only posted via a paste-site to the chat in question, but afterwards I wanted to make it visible here.)

filk! )

Dear dreams:

I approve of having melodies in you to transcribe when I wake up.

When they're in A♯ minor cut time with tons of strictly-timed grace notes and a syncopated backing rhythm, this can however get a bit inconvenient.

I realize it would be too much to ask you to actually stop. And I don't want that! But it would be nice to know that there were some recognition of how awkward this can make it when I wake up.

Thank you for your consideration. c..c

In related news, I should probably keep a more rigid straight-edge on my desk to draw staff lines with. And figure out how I want to tag these.

Addendum: Today is a day in which we wake up five hours later than planned and may well have needed it.

Sigh.

Where's the good probably-sorta-furry(??) sites for multiple-sorts-of-creative-works browsing/uploading/casual-community nowadays?

We were poking at Weasyl, since that's what our predecessor used, but we haven't gotten any response from support so far re how their specifically forbidding separate accounts for “changing username for aesthetic purposes” might interact with us being sequentials. We can't delete our predecessor's account (only void its profile), and if they ever contested that we were the “same person” switching names aesthetically and merged it into a hypothetical account of ours, that'd be a disaster. So having a presence there seems Unsafe. I'm not sure how much I like their model-conformism leanings anyway…

FurAffinity, no, I think not. DeviantArt I vaguely recall hearing mixed/sketchy things about.

There might be a Dreamwidth community or a creativity-focused Mastodon instance that'd be good, but that's not the same thing.

I mean it's not like we have anything to upload right now anyway, but…

We started using this a few other places, and it seems okay at least as a stopgap, so why not. Honestly, the way it's gone over elsewhere, it's been surprisingly distinctive, so it might just stick around, realistically…
